A Flow of Consciousness
As identity changes, language follows.
Who I was when I was five looks a lot like now.
A child once scared of her own existence,
All too apologetic, now evolves into the me of today.
As knowledge is gathered, identity follows.
I'm a product of mi padre's ongoing denial of our Blackness.
I'm a product of mi abuelita's story being lost in a system that
devalues rural areas, peoples, la sierra.
I'm a product of mi madre's mixed-raced identity.
Slave-trade survivors, Indigenous mestizaje.
As language adapts, reclaiming surfaces.
Aunque prefieres olvidarlo para no tanto sufrir - somos negrxs.
Negrxs valientes y orgullosxs.
Fiercely Black and proud.
As identity changes, I find myself.
